In 2018, I walked into Family Haven with my two boys believing I needed to be rescued.
I was exhausted. Overwhelmed. Living in survival mode.
At the time, I was searching for safety, answers, and a way forward. What I didn’t realize was that I was about to begin the most important journey of my life—not a journey to find someone else to save me, but a journey to rediscover myself.
Looking back now, I can see that Family Haven was more than a shelter. It was a turning point.
Living in Survival Mode
When you’re in survival mode, you don’t always realize you’re there.
You become so focused on getting through each day that you lose touch with yourself. Your energy goes toward managing other people’s emotions, avoiding conflict, anticipating problems, and doing whatever you can to keep everything together.
I spent years focused on everyone else’s needs, everyone else’s expectations, and everyone else’s feelings.
I was constantly overthinking, second-guessing myself, and looking for validation outside of myself.
I thought something was wrong with me.
What I know now is that my nervous system was doing exactly what it had learned to do in order to survive.
I wasn’t broken.
I was adapting.
What I Thought Healing Meant
Back then, I had a very different idea of what healing looked like.
I thought healing meant I would eventually become fearless.
I thought it meant I would never feel anxious again.
I thought it meant finding the perfect answer that would finally make everything okay.
I thought healing was about becoming a different person.
But healing didn’t unfold the way I expected.
There wasn’t one breakthrough moment that magically changed everything.
Instead, healing happened through thousands of small moments.
Moments where I learned to trust myself.
Moments where I set a boundary.
Moments where I stopped seeking permission from other people.
Moments where I chose to listen to my own voice.
The Lesson That Changed Everything
The biggest lesson Family Haven taught me wasn’t that I needed someone to save me.
It taught me that I had more strength inside me than I ever realized.
The lesson wasn’t that life would never be hard again.
The lesson was that I could survive hard things and keep moving forward.
Over the years, I learned that healing isn’t about becoming someone new.
Healing is about coming home to yourself.
It’s about remembering who you were before fear, self-doubt, people-pleasing, and survival mode convinced you otherwise.
It’s about learning that your needs matter.
Your feelings matter.
Your voice matters.
And you matter.
What I Know Now
Today, I understand that healing is not a straight line.
There are still challenges.
There are still moments of uncertainty.
There are still opportunities to grow.
But there is also something I didn’t have back then.
Trust.
Trust in myself.
Trust in my ability to navigate difficult seasons.
Trust that I can face challenges without abandoning myself.
In 2018, I couldn’t have imagined sitting here writing this blog, recording a podcast, sharing my story, and building a business focused on helping others heal.
But that’s the thing about healing.
You don’t have to see the entire path.
You only have to take the next step.
If You’re in a Hard Season Right Now
I want you to know that where you are today doesn’t have to be where you stay.
The season you’re in right now may not make sense yet.
It may feel overwhelming.
It may feel unfair.
It may feel like you’ll never get to the other side.
But sometimes the season that breaks you open is also the season that introduces you to your own strength.
Sometimes the hardest chapters become the chapters that shape us the most.
And sometimes the lesson we need to learn isn’t that someone else will save us.
It’s that we’ve been stronger than we realized all along.
