Sometimes You’re Tired Because You’re Carrying Too Much

“Sometimes you’re tired because you’re carrying too much.”

For a long time, whenever I felt exhausted, I assumed the answer was simple: I needed more sleep, more rest, or maybe a vacation. And while physical exhaustion is real, I’ve learned that not all tiredness comes from the body.

Sometimes the heaviest things we carry aren’t physical at all.

Sometimes we’re carrying stress that isn’t ours to solve. Sometimes we’re carrying responsibility for other people’s happiness. Sometimes we’re carrying old stories, old fears, old expectations, and old versions of ourselves that no longer fit who we’re becoming.

And all of that has weight.

Many of us have been taught to keep pushing. To keep giving. To keep showing up for everyone else, even when we’re running on empty. We become so accustomed to carrying everything that we stop questioning whether it belongs to us in the first place.

We carry guilt for setting boundaries.

We carry the pressure to make everyone happy.

We carry the belief that we have to fix everything.

We carry old wounds, old disappointments, and old fears about what might happen if we finally let go.

Eventually, all of that becomes exhausting.

The interesting thing about emotional burdens is that they often feel normal because we’ve been carrying them for so long. We don’t realize how much energy they consume until we finally put them down.

Sometimes the reason you feel drained isn’t because you’re doing too much.

It’s because you’re carrying too much.

Healing often involves learning the difference.

Not every problem is yours to solve.

Not every emotion is yours to absorb.

Not every expectation deserves your energy.

Not every relationship is yours to maintain single-handedly.

One of the most powerful questions you can ask yourself is:

What am I carrying that isn’t mine?

The answer might surprise you.

You may discover you’re carrying someone else’s disappointment. Someone else’s expectations. Someone else’s version of who they think you should be.

You may discover you’re carrying an old identity that no longer aligns with who you’re becoming.

You may discover you’re carrying fears that were never yours to begin with.

And once you become aware of what you’re carrying, you have a choice.

You can keep carrying it.

Or you can set it down.

Letting go doesn’t mean you stop caring. It doesn’t mean you become selfish. It doesn’t mean you stop loving people.

It simply means you stop sacrificing yourself in the process.

Sometimes the most healing thing you can do isn’t adding another self-help book, another routine, another strategy, or another responsibility.

Sometimes the most healing thing you can do is release.

Release the pressure.

Release the guilt.

Release the expectations.

Release what no longer belongs to you.

Because it’s difficult to receive what’s next when your hands are still full of what’s no longer meant for you.

So if you’ve been feeling tired lately, ask yourself:

What am I carrying that isn’t mine?

The answer may reveal exactly where your energy has been going.

And putting it down may be the first step toward getting that energy back.
